Atlit camp
מחנה עתלית
The Atlit detainee camp is where the British held Jewish immigrants who arrived without permits during the Mandate period, many of them Holocaust survivors. Restored barracks, fences and an immigrant ship tell the story of Ha'apala, the struggle to reach the Land of Israel. In 1945 Palmach fighters broke in and freed the detainees. It is a powerful museum for families.
Tip: Combine it with the artists' village of Ein Hod or the Carmel coast nearby.
